100% Kona coffee is regarded worldwide as a classic coffee. Pure Kona beans are grown by hundreds of passionate small farmers, on holdings averaging less than three acres, near the town of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Pure Kona coffee beans are produced exclusively from trees of a traditional strain of Typica, one of the world's oldest coffee varieties. The 100% pure Kona coffee beans we sell are selectively hand-picked, usually by the farmers themselves, to make great Kona coffees. These premium 100% Kona coffee beans are wet-processed using the traditional ferment-and-wash method. The fundamental Kona coffee cup reflects this attention to detail. Pure Kona beans yield a drink with gentle, lively acidity and high-toned, clean complexity.

But when it comes to comparing coffee, all 100% Kona coffee cups are not all the same. The complex micro-climates of the rugged terrain where 100% pure Kona coffee beans are grown, and variations in husbandry and processing among Kona coffee farmers, have created a fascinating array of variations. These unique and subtle shifts in the production of pure Kona coffee beans yield results ranging from sweet and simple, to sweet and delicately complex, and from exhilaratingly fruity, to (at the highest growing altitudes) grandly austere and acidy.

Kona Coffee growing and production are strictly controled by the Hawaiian DOA. Each bag of green Kona coffee is graded by the DOA. The grades in the descending order of their value are: Kona Fancy (Top Grade), Kona #1, Kona Prime (Lowest acceptable grade) and finally Kona #3 (unacceptable - OFF GRADE Kona Coffee).

If you are buying Kona beans and the grade is Not Specified, you are most likely buying the Unacceptable Off Grade Kona.

We offer six varieties of the highest-grade 100% Kona coffee beans available. In fact, we don't even offer Kona Prime, a lower-grade Kona coffee — in our 100% Kona lineup. We don't consider it of a high enough quality for our 100% Kona selection.
